چکیده

A methodology is presented for determining the probability of dikes failing due to uplifting and piping using directional sampling. The study concerns one dike section in the lower river area of The Netherlands. For this dike section, the three most important random quantities are: the North-Sea water level, the river Rhine discharge, and the critical head in the event of uplifting and piping. Dike failure due to uplifting and piping is defined as the event in which the resistance (the critical head) drops below the stress (the outer water level, a combination of both sea level and river discharge, minus the inner water level). Since the critical head is correlated over the length of a dike, the spatial variation and correlation is modelled using a Markovian dependency structure. Three-dimensional directional sampling on the basis of the polar coordinates of the sea water level, the river discharge, and the critical head is used to determine the failure probability. 2 FAILURE DUE TO UPLIFTING AND PIPING Uplifting occurs when the covering layer of a dike bursts, due to the high water pressure, whereas piping under dikes occurs due to the entrainment of soil particles by the erosive action of seepage flow. The limit-state function of uplifting and piping is given by (see also Figure 1) ) ( b z h up H M H M H Z − + − = (1) and } , max{ p p u u up H M H M H = (2)

Evaluation of Risk Areas Due to the Piping and Failure of Ghare Aghach earth Dam Using Satellite Images

Hydraulic simulation of dam failure and estimation of damages From it, it will be of great help in the field of relief activities and proper planning in the downstream areas. In the present study, the hazardous areas due to the failure of the Ghare Aghach dam of piping type have been investigated using satellite images. Parameters due to dam failure were calculated using the BREACH model and it...

Correlation impact in piping erosion for safety assessment of multi-functional flood defences

Introduction Adaptation to climate change is one of the main concerns for cities in deltaic areas. For a country such as the Netherlands where two thirds of the land are located under sea level, reliability of the flood defence system is a top priority. Flood defences are exposed to different deterioration processes (also known as failure mechanisms) which might compromise the water retaining c...

Some Comments on the Entropy-Based Criteria for Piping

This paper is an extension of previous work which characterises soil behaviours using the grading entropy diagram. The present work looks at the piping process in granular soils, by considering some new data from flood-protection dikes. The piping process is divided into three parts here: particle movement at the micro scale to segregate free water; sand boil development (which is the initiatio...

Numerical computation of seepage erosion below dams (piping)

In delta areas the land is protected from floods and high tides by dikes. In general these are constructed of impervious clays and built on a sandy aquifer as subsoil. Such structures are vulnerable to an erosion effect called piping. The actual word 'piping' refers to the development of shallow channels in the sand below the dike, which begins at the downstream side of the structure. Here ofte...

Reliability based design of flood defenses and river dikes

In this paper an example is elaborated of the design of a river dike, incorporating reliability-based models. The design is demonstrated with the help of this example, which is based on [1]. 1. PROBLEM DESCRIPTION A river dike has to be designed to protect a particular region of land. The goal is to minimize the construction cost and the expected loss, due to inundation. The total cost can be e...
